What do you think Christmas sustainable? How would it all work in it a changed world,or should all do-gooders leave our festivals alone.
I feel Christmas is a special time of year not the parcels under the tree but the giving and seeing
Friends and families to enjoy time together, when maybe it is harder other times through out the year. I think in one sense that it is important for the English to keep some tradition and enjoy this pleasant time of year. However, it has become very commercial resulting in a lot of wast with wrapping paper, cards, boxes, plastic and turkeys not to mention the Christmas trees. Christmas is responsible for share of 5.3 tonnes of wasted food in the UK. This is sad as there are many with little or no food in the world. We need to as a nation buy less and maybe this year due to economic situation we might. Christmas is a time for giving maybe instead of wast we could give food to the red cross so they in turn can give to the homeless ( food still not cooked and in wrappings). I found many sites that had some helpful information http://www.eartheasycom/givesustainchristmas.htm. and http://www.authorsteam.com/presentation/doride-57293-primary-education-sustainabledevelopmen. http://www.gardian.co.uk/enviroment/green-christmas.
I was rather shocked by what I read. I enjoy this time of year but did not think about anything but the enjoyment and excitement of little steps in the morning hearing that farther Christmas has been, seeing little faces with smiles jumping up with joy when they got their special and much wanted toy. In 2005 125,000 of plastic packing was used could cardboard and other recycle materials be used? so much waste. I know there is nothing like a real Christmas tree, decorations and lights but at what cost. It has been suggested that our footprint is more than three time what it should be in the UK. After watching a program on electricity where they used I think eighty people on bikes to create the electricity for one home for one day between 7am till six pm seeing how hard they worked just to keep the normal every appliances I really don't feel adding extra is a very positive at all. Christmas as it now stands is not sustainable. Making small changes like reducing bulbs watts only putting on the Christmas lights for a short time may help and not put on the room light the same time or reduce the light. use recycle papers and put them back in the recycle bin to start the pros's again don't wast anything!
This is only for a short time but the effects last considerably longer.
